Upcycled Emergency Stove – Adaptation of the Boy Scout’s Buddy Burner

This adaptation of the Boy Scout’s Buddy Burner is a great way to upcycle and empty cookie or coffee tin, old candles, newspaper, and cardboard. This Upcycled Emergency Stove is prefect for keeping in your car and backpack in case of an emergency that leaves you stranded overnight. It will keep you warm and can be used to boil water. This Upcycled Emergency Stove is also good for fun times like to warm up while playing in the snow.

Materials:
  1. Empty cookie or coffee tin (the larger the tin, the longer the fire burns)
  2. Plain cardboard
  3. Newspaper or brown packing paper
  4. Candles (used, old, broken, any color) (of course new ones will work yet defeat the purpose of upcycling)

Directions:

1. Clean cookie or coffee tin

2. Cut plain cardboard into strips that fit your tin. In this demonstration, we are using a short cookie tin, so we used 1 inch wide strips of cardboard. If you are using a 2-lb. coffee tin, you would use 6-1/2 inch wide strips of cardboard.

3. Cut or rip strips of newspaper or brown packing paper slightly larger (1/4” – 1/2") than the cardboard.

4. Starting with the cardboard, line the interior of the tin forming a circle.

5. Add a layer of newspaper.

6. Continue alternating cardboard and newspaper until the tin is full.

7. Carefully chop the candle into small pieces.

8. Put the chopped candle pieces into a heat proof bowl.

9. Carefully set bowl into a pan of boiling water.

10. Melt candles.

11. Carefully remove the bowl of melted wax from heat.

12. Slowly and carefully pour melted wax into the tin coating the cardboard and newspaper.

13. Gently move the tin side to side to evenly distribute the wax.

14. Let cool then put the lid on.

When you are ready to use the stove, simply take off the lid and light the newspaper. It works as kindling to ignite the cardboard.

CAUTION – DO NOT GET WATER ON THIS STOVE. IT WILL CAUSE A BURST OF HIGH FLAMES. THE WAX ACTS LIKE A FAT AND BURNING FATS AND WATER DO NOT MIX!

Store your upcycled emergency stove in your car or backpack, so it’s handy when you need it. The stove used in this demonstration burned for an hour before losing its intensity. Larger stoves will burn for longer.
