Environmentally Friendly Holiday Travel

The holiday season is fun and festive full of family gatherings and holiday parties. Most of us travel long distances during the holiday season to visit family. This extra travel time increases the number of carbon emissions released into the atmosphere. There are ways you can travel this season guilt-free of your increased carbon footprint.

Air Travel

One way to reduce your carbon footprint when traveling by airplane is to participate in a carbon offsetting program. By purchasing a carbon offset, you are supporting a non-profit organization that supports carbon-reducing projects. Investigate in the program prior to participating to ensure you know how the organization uses the funds, if the results are guaranteed, and if the company is certified.

Other ways to reduce your carbon footprint when traveling by airplane include:

  • Use electronic tickets to save paper
  • opt for non-stop flights if possible
  • Pack light – share toiletries with traveling companions
  • Instead of carrying large presents with you on the flight give gift cards
  • Rent an electric vehicle

Road Travel

If you are driving to your destination this holiday season there are ways you can reduce your carbon footprint. Prepare for your road trip by maintaining your vehicle by having the oil changed and checking the tire pressure. If you can, carpool or take public transportation to get to your holiday gathering or party. Another way to increase your car’s fuel efficiency is to go easy on the gas pedal and brakes.

It is important to remember to not let your vehicle idle. In colder weather, it is tempting to keep the vehicle idling to keep warm. Do not do it. Idling wastes fuel, increase carbon emissions, and increases the passenger’s exposure to exhaust fumes.

Happy Holidays

Celebrate the holidays by being kinder to the environment. Take actions to reduce our carbon footprint this holiday season. And end this year by being aware of how your actions affect the world around you.
